BACHIR & MOSTAPHA ATTAR/MASTER MUSICIANS OF JAJOUKA

An album produced by the Rolling Stones Brian Jones a month before his drowning death in 1969, Brian Jones Presents the Master Musicians of Jajouka introduced the unique sound of the Master Musicians of Jajouka to much of the western world. At the time, the group had been performing their unique, drone-heavy, music for several thousand years. The band, comprised of sons of sons of musicians, has subsequently recorded several unforgettable albums on their own and has been featured on albums by Ornette Coleman, the Rolling Stones, Randy Weston, Maceo Parker, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant.

An album released by the group in 1992, Apocalypse, was produced by Bill Laswell. An all-male group, the Master Musicians of Jajouka features 15 rhaita (a double-reed, oboe-like instrument) players and five drummers. Only a son of a master musician can become a master musician. Members of the group, who speak Arabic, adopt the surname "Attar," which translates as "the perfume ...

The Weakerthans
Formed after Propagandhi member John K. Samson got the itch to perform and record again after taking a sabbatical to write and start a publishing company, the Winnipeg-based Weakerthans took Samson's music in a completely different direction. Propagandhi had been known for powerful, speedy punk and overtly political lyrics, but the Weakerthans went down a more melodic and introspective path.

Atom & His Package
Pennsylvania-native punk pioneer Adam Goren is one of the most unconventional musicians of his time. Armed with only his "package," the creative musician is known for his hilarious, playful synth-pop punk songs and outrageous rhymes about unconventional topics.
